Her career in public service spans 45 years, during which she has made significant contributions across several key ministries and departments. Her journey began at the Montserrat Public Library, where she served for 21 years. Starting as an Office Assistant, she quickly proved her dedication and capability, taking on numerous roles that allowed her to touch the lives of countless young Montserratians. Edris played a pivotal role in fostering a love for reading among the island’s children, often going beyond her duties to ensure that each child was nurtured and encouraged.
Her work in the library was more than just a job—it was a mission to empower the next generation through education and literacy. Edris’s commitment to her community was further demonstrated through her professional development, including specialized training in Basic Archives and Conservation in Barbados and London, which enhanced her ability to serve effectively.
In 2003, Edris transitioned to the Social Services Department as a Community Development Officer and later as a Social Worker Assistant. In this role, she focused on child safeguarding, family support, and the coordination of programs aimed at youth development. One of her most significant achievements was spearheading a successful campaign to secure school supplies for vulnerable children, a project that continues to support Montserrat’s youth today. Edris’s ability to connect with and support even the most challenging cases highlights her deep empathy and relentless drive to make a difference.
Edris’s journey into politics began unexpectedly in 2004, during a Gender Machinery meeting in St. Vincent, where her presentation on Montserrat caught the attention of Dr. Heather Johnson of CARICOM. Impressed by Edris’s confidence and persuasive abilities, Dr. Johnson encouraged her to consider a career in politics—a suggestion that planted the seed for Edris’s eventual entry into the political sphere.
Reflecting on her extensive career and volunteer work, Edris realized that her contributions to Montserrat were significant but that she could do even more in a political capacity. Her involvement in various boards and committees, including the Parole Board, Montserrat Red Cross Board of Trustees, and the St. Peter’s Anglican Church Parish Vestry, has equipped her with a broad perspective on the needs and challenges facing Montserrat.
As a trained mediator for the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Edris has developed strong conflict resolution skills, further preparing her for the responsibilities of political leadership. Her decision to enter politics is driven by a desire to extend her service to the entire Montserrat community, ensuring that her efforts benefit not just a specific segment, but all Montserratians.
Edris’s political philosophy is grounded in strong values and principles. She believes in the power of hard work, integrity, and inclusivity. Her approach to leadership is people-centered, with a focus on upholding professionalism and making decisions that are in the best interest of the community. Edris’s faith plays a central role in her life, guiding her actions and reinforcing her belief that with dedication and determination, anything is possible.
Edris is passionate about addressing the critical issues facing Montserrat, particularly those affecting vulnerable populations. One of her primary concerns is the lack of adequate support for persons with disabilities, especially children with learning disabilities. She advocates for the hiring of resident specialists and the full implementation of the Montserrat Disability Policy to ensure that these children receive the comprehensive care and education they deserve.
Child safeguarding is another key priority for Edris. She proposes the establishment of a residential care facility for children in need of protection, offering a safe and nurturing environment for at-risk minors. Additionally, Edris is committed to revitalizing the Apprenticeship Program, which would provide valuable skills and training for young people, helping them to secure meaningful employment and contribute to Montserrat’s economy.
Inclusivity is at the heart of Edris’s vision for Montserrat. She believes that social welfare benefits and support should be available to all who need them, regardless of nationality. Her goal is to create a community where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to thrive.
Having witnessed Montserrat’s resilience through many challenges, Edris is inspired by the strength and perseverance of its people. She envisions a sustainable and prosperous future for the island, one where economic growth is balanced with the preservation of Montserrat’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. Edris is committed to working with her colleagues in the MCAP administration to build a Montserrat that is inclusive, vibrant, and united.
